It focuses on authentic, high-frequency examples from contemporary spoken and written French.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lexogoth serves as a <strong>practical bridge between corpus linguistics and language pedagogy<\/strong>. Unlike traditional resources, it is built on the principles of <em>Data-Driven Learning<\/em>. By exploring a vast corpus of over 40,000 authentic entries, learners are empowered to analyze and internalize how French is naturally structured across various contexts and registers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although a translation is provided for every example, it is important to note that Lexogoth is not a translation tool, but rather a learning resource that is built around authentic input, designed to foster lexical depth, register awareness, and learner autonomy. Its ultimate goal is to help users maintain and expand their vocabulary through structured exposure to real French usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:68px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Why was Lexogoth developed?<\/strong><br>Vocabulary acquisition is one of the biggest challenges in learning a foreign language. Every new word requires knowledge of pronunciation, spelling, grammatical usage, shades of meaning, language register, and possible combinations. Learning and using vocabulary correctly is, therefore, a complex process. Yet many textbooks approach this aspect of language learning too simplistically. They often limit themselves to word lists with translations, sometimes accompanied by a single example sentence. A few fill-in-the-blank exercises may follow, and then students are expected to use the new words fluently in oral or written tasks. Our experience as language teachers, however, shows that this approach is rarely sufficient. Language learning\u2014especially vocabulary acquisition\u2014is not a linear process where a word list and a few basic exercises lead to active knowledge. Students don\u2019t learn a language by constructing sentences word by word; it\u2019s too laborious, unnatural, and prone to errors. This method is based on the mistaken assumption that students will automatically learn to use words correctly from a loose list of translations. In our view, what\u2019s missing is an essential intermediate step\u2014one that enables learners to become competent users of their newly acquired vocabulary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Lexogoth: A Different Approach to Vocabulary Instruction?<\/strong><br>To address the shortcomings of traditional vocabulary teaching mentioned above, we developed <strong>Lexogoth<\/strong>\u2014a desktop program for Windows 11, aimed at advanced students and teachers of French (CEFR levels B and C). Lexogoth does not focus on translations, but on how words (lemmas) are used in meaningful context. Each lemma is explained through clear, realistic example sentences drawn from both spoken and written French. Users can consult so-called <em>chunks<\/em>: short phrases, set expressions, idioms, and example sentences that demonstrate the functional use of a word in authentic contexts. This approach gives learners insight into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>syntactic constructions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>various combination possibilities (<em>collocations<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>register and usage frequency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>subtle shifts in meaning depending on context<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of version 2 (January 2026), Lexogoth includes over <strong>40,000 clickable items<\/strong>, each linked to authentic example fragments. Many lemmas are illustrated with multiple examples, showing how the word functions across different contexts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. How to Get Started with Lexogoth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The integrated structure of Lexogoth and its Lexical Toolbox allows for highly differentiated learning, adapting smoothly to any student&#8217;s level, from simple vocabulary lookups to advanced text analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When preparing for productive tasks (writing or speaking), students can begin by searching directly for specific lemmas. By repeatedly processing the accompanying example sentences, they build an active network of readily usable &#8220;chunks&#8221; (automated language fragments that serve as the building blocks for fluent communication). While the volume of examples can seem extensive, this frequent exposure is exactly what reinforces acquisition, helping students internalize realistic expressions in contemporary French.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From this initial search phase, learners can seamlessly scale up to deeper analysis. Using the advanced features of the <strong>Toolbox<\/strong>, they can dissect their own texts, investigate complex collocations, and compare linguistic structures directly with the corpus. This flexible, multi-layered approach ensures that students can work at their own pace, moving from simple exposure to critical text analysis to build a solid and reliable lexical foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:37px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. Some examples<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>(a) <em>&#8220;la confiance&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><br>Here\u2019s a concrete example to illustrate how Lexogoth can support French learners. A strong student who knows the individual words <em>\u201cconfiance\u201d<\/em> and <em>\u201cavoir\u201d<\/em> might attempt a sentence like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 ?<em>\u201cElle a de la confiance dans ses amies.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While this may seem grammatically acceptable, a native speaker would find it unnatural. Such awkward constructions are common when learners rely only on word lists and limited syntactic knowledge to build sentences.With Lexogoth, the student gains access to dozens of authentic examples where the word <em>confiance<\/em> is used naturally. These so-called <em>chunks<\/em> offer realistic and reusable combinations, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>T\u2019as raison, il me faisait confiance et j\u2019ai trop parl\u00e9, j\u2019ai merd\u00e9.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u00eatre digne de respect, de foi, de confiance, de m\u00e9pris<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>d\u00e9border d\u2019enthousiasme, de passion, de joie, de confiance<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Elle n\u2019a plus confiance dans l\u2019avenir.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Je n\u2019ai en elle qu\u2019une confiance limit\u00e9e.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>faire confiance \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9quit\u00e9 d\u2019un m\u00e9diateur<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>L\u2019enqu\u00eate montre que la confiance dans la politique a encore chut\u00e9 depuis 2020.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Il est temps qu\u2019elle reprenne confiance en elle.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Il n\u2019a plus confiance en lui.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Elle manque de confiance en elle, cela se ressent.<\/em><br>(+ 30 other examples)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal isn\u2019t for students to memorize all these sentences. Rather, they can select one or two relevant structures, practice them, and apply them in communicative tasks. Through repeated exposure and use during their studies, these <em>chunks<\/em> gradually become automated and form a practical network of lexical knowledge. This way, learners not only understand how <em>confiance<\/em> is used, but also pick up useful constructions like <em>manquer de<\/em> or <em>reprendre confiance<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>(b) Transition words \/ linking words<\/strong><br>Another common issue in language learning is the incorrect or unnatural use of connectors like <em>toutefois<\/em>, <em>cependant<\/em>, or <em>pourtant<\/em>. Students often wonder where exactly such words belong in a sentence. Most textbooks offer only a single example, causing learners to assume that the word must always appear in that one position. Others rely on their native language to guess the placement, which often leads to mistakes. Lexogoth gives students access to a wide range of example sentences that use these connectors in varied and correct contexts. This allows them to independently develop insight into their usage and positioning within realistic sentence structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5. By actively manipulating these linguistic patterns and transforming them into personalized databases, study notes or interactive tests, learners seamlessly bridge the gap between passive recognition and fluent, active production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A brief overview of the six modules:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Module 1: Database functions<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allows you to create, edit, and manage <code>.lexdb<\/code> files containing French sentences and English translations. You can use it to practice vocabulary, delete duplicates, and perform advanced searches or n-gram analyses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Module 2: Import \/ Export<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Handles data exchange by importing text blocks directly from Lexogoth. Additionally, this module exports databases, tests, results, and context blocks into editable RTF files.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Module 3: Testing<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Design digital tests using five interactive question types, such as multiple-choice, matching, and gap-fill exercises. The module administers tests digitally, calculates scores automatically, and saves the results.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Module 4: Context modules<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manages complete, coherent text blocks instead of isolated sentences. Users can interactively study sentences and their translations, and practice using an integrated timer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Module 5: Collocations &amp; Syntax<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enables deep corpus-wide research within Lexogoth to find fixed expressions, grammar patterns, style guides, and syntactic structures. Selected sentences can be exported directly to databases or context blocks or text files (RTF).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Module 6: Lexogoth Workbench (Text Analysis)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Analyzes your own French texts by automatically assigning grammatical labels (POS tags) and detecting multi-word expressions. It allows you to edit texts pedagogically and compare them directly with the corpus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>6. Supporting Material for CEFR Levels A\u2013B Students<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, Lexogoth includes a complete overview of the content typically found in a French-as-a-foreign-language course for the full A level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR \u2013 Levels A1, A2, and parts of B2). It offers a structured summary of key grammar topics, vocabulary, and language functions relevant to these levels. For the vocabulary and language functions components, we also have a wide range of (communicative) exercises available, though these are not included in the program itself. It is important to note that this secondary component is meant to serve as <strong>a supportive tool<\/strong> within Lexogoth. It allows students to efficiently review or learn certain topics independently.
