As an integral part of Lexogoth, the Toolbox application allows both students and teachers of French to work with corpus data in a targeted and differentiated manner. At the core of this system is the Workbench, the key module that lets you analyze, tag, and enrich your own French texts using the Lexogoth database. Supported by five additional modules, our aim is to provide you with concrete, practical tools to study, teach, and test vocabulary and lexical patterns in a highly customized environment.
1. The Lexogoth Workbench
The Workbench is the most powerful module within the Lexical Toolbox, designed to let you analyze, read, and study arbitrary French texts.
With this module, you can:
- Analyze and tag texts: Automatically assign POS tags (parts of speech) to all words and instantly recognize grammatical tenses.
- Search the corpus: Perform advanced, integrated searches directly within the Lexogoth corpus.
- Annotate for differentiated learning: Annotate texts manually to support differentiated reading and learning, tailoring the material to different student levels.
- Export and reuse content: Export your annotated texts to standard text files, or easily add selected sentences directly to your Lexogoth databases and context modules for further practice.

2. The module “Collocations & Syntaxis
The Collocations & Syntax module allows you to query the Lexogoth corpus in detail using four powerful search methods and provides flexible ways to export your results:
- Pattern Search: Search directly for words to display their fixed or highly frequent lexical patterns from the Lexogoth corpus in a clear, organized list.
- Collocation Search: Find and analyze fixed or frequent word combinations (collocations) within the corpus.
- Advanced Search: Search for individual words or combinations using advanced search options, including wildcards, distance constraints, and POS tags (parts of speech).
- Comment Search: Search through the integrated comments or annotations within the Lexogoth corpus.
3. Database functions
Create, edit, practice, and study lexical databases based on the Lexogoth corpus. This module includes several handy features designed to minimize cognitive load and make your study process as efficient as possible:
Smart Filtering: Easily clean up your databases by automatically removing duplicate entries or deleting multiple items at once to keep your study lists focused.
Low Cognitive Load: Keep your focus sharp thanks to a highly intuitive search function and an incredibly easy-to-use concordancer, allowing you to quickly look up words in context without feeling overwhelmed.
Interactive Study Mode: Study actively by hiding the French or English columns, allowing you to test yourself with immediate feedback on your progress.
4. The Context Block Module
This module is designed for studying and practicing vocabulary in a coherent way, without tearing sentences out of their original context.
- Custom Logic: Create and organize your own text blocks based on your personal study goals or teaching logic, allowing you to structure the material exactly how you want.
- Full Text Integrity: Study words and phrases within their actual context by working with entire text blocks, rather than loose, disconnected sentences.
- Active Association: Manually link French words and phrases to their English translations and add custom notes directly within the text.
- Graduated Reading: Practice at your own pace using a built-in timer that reveals translations only after a set number of seconds, helping you train your reading comprehension step by step.
5. Test module
This module allows you to easily design, administer, and automatically grade targeted language tests based directly on your study materials and corpus data.
- Diverse Question Types: Create comprehensive tests using various question formats, including Multiple Choice, Exact Completion, Open Questions, Matching, and DropDown menus with placeholders.
- Easy Example Import: Build your questions efficiently by importing authentic sentences and examples directly from the Lexogoth corpus or your custom databases while designing the test.
- Automatic Scoring: Save time with instant, automated scoring and feedback immediately after a student completes the test.
- Export and Share: Easily export your complete tests, including questions and answers, to standard text files (RTF) for offline printing, sharing, or record-keeping.
6. Export and import module
This module enables seamless data exchange between your databases, context blocks, the Lexogoth corpus, and standard text processors:
- Document Conversion: Convert your custom databases and context block files directly into print-friendly text files (RTF), making it easy to open and edit them in external word processors like Microsoft Word.
- Corpus Harvesting: Import entire blocks and segments of text directly from the Lexogoth corpus straight into your personal databases to quickly build rich learning materials.
- Database Exporting: Export your entire vocabulary databases to standard text files, allowing you to easily share, backup, or print your custom study lists.
- Test & Results Export: Easily export complete tests, questions, answers, and student test results to standard text files (RTF) for grading, physical distribution, or administrative records.
